We're all imposters here
It's not a syndrome, its a sign
"When are you going to write about imposter syndrome?"
A young dentist recently asked me this question, and it really resonated.
Imposter syndrome is a significant issue for many in our profession, especially when starting out. At university, you might feel like you’re not as skilled as others in your year. Once you’re practising, that feeling can shift—you may start comparing yourself to other dentists, wondering if your work measures up.
It can become a cycle.
You might worry that your preparations aren’t good enough, that your treatments won’t last, or that you’re not ready to try something new. The fear of not being "good enough" can hold you back.
But here’s the reality: we’ve all been there. Even experienced dentists—those with 20 or 30 years under their belt—still have moments of doubt. Every time we push ourselves to expand our skillset or try something new, imposter syndrome can surface.
The key is to recognise it for what it is: a sign that you’re growing.
Instead of letting it hold you back, acknowledge it, set it aside, and focus on your development. Growth happens outside of our comfort zones, and imposter syndrome is just a natural part of that process.
So, keep learning, keep challenging yourself, and remember—you’re not alone in feeling this way.
