Lessons in learning

Playing tourist in Canberra recently, I went to the Glassworks museum and watched a young student learn how to blow a piece of glassware.

Two things struck me: the joy on the face of the learner and the patience and care on the part of the tutor.

Is this what the next generation of dental graduates will experience when they enter practice?

How much time does a practice principal have to guide their young clinician in the first year of their practice?

How does the graduate select the right practice for them where they can receive the guidance they need?

How receptive will the new graduate be to guidance, or will they be resistant to feedback?

How many practices are fully prepared for a new graduate and not just putting someone on because they are desperate for a response to their advert? This might be especially true in regional areas.

Both parties need to understand what they are committing to when a practice takes on a new grad, as a bad experience can scar both sides.

Whether you’re the employer or the future employee, do you have what it takes?
