What price loyalty?
Just this week we had to call on a team member to help us out on their day off due to being short staffed. I felt bad for asking.
Recruiting, training and retaining staff is part of the challenges of running a dental practice.
Central to the success of any business is the core of long serving loyal team members; the people you can rely on and who are emotionally invested in your business.
Any yet these are the employees that are most likely to be exploited either knowingly or unknowingly.
Another example that could apply to any industry or workplace could be paying a young highly skilled employee less than another employee just because the award level is lower and they are newer to the organsiation.
In a climate of ever increasing business costs, it's a dilemma many employers face.
Some recently published research explored this phenomenon and is worth a read.
“Loyal Workers Are Selectively And Ironically Targeted For Exploitation,”
Matthew L. Stanley, Christopher B. Neck, Christopher P. Neck. Journal of Experimental Social Psychology, Jan. 6, 2023. DOI: 10.1016/j.jesp.2022.104442
There’s no easy answer.
The important thing is that as business owners we need to be aware of this and aim to be fair to our employees and not punish them for their loyalty.
“It’s a vicious cycle,” Stanley said. “Loyal workers tend to get picked out for exploitation. And then when they do something that's exploitative, they end up getting a boost in their reputation as a loyal worker, making them more likely to get picked out in the future.”
Have a great week and appreciate your team,
Rosie
