Notes from abroad

The power of activism

Last week I was in Tasmania, a state that has a proud history of successful  environmental activism. As part of the trip, we traveled up the Gordon River and learnt about how the environmental activists in the 80s worked and collaborated with the historical huon pine harvesters to successfully defeat the plans to build the Franklin River dam.

Traditionally, you would expect environmental groups and foresters to be at loggerheads, however, both parties had a deep respect for the history and importance of the ecosystem.

Back at work this week, this popped up in my twitter.

So I’m back on the bandwagon of how we as dental professionals can work with other bodies, whether medical professionals or even environmentalists, to lobby for healthier food.

“More that 80% of all sugar produced in Australia is exported as bulk raw sugar, making Australia the second largest raw sugar exporter in the world.”

31.1 million tonnes of sugarcane were produced in 2020.

355 thousand hectares were harvested for sugarcane milling.

3,830 sugarcane businesses produced sugarcane.

7.3 million tonnes of sugarcane were produced in the Burdekin Statistical Area Level 2 (SA2), which is the largest sugarcane producing SA2 in Australia.

I read a comment recently about, whether by advising patients on their diet, dentists were diverging ‘from their lane’.

I think that this is a lane we share with any health practitioner in providing consistent messaging to the community about the perils of sugar.

As you can see from the quotes, we are up against the big boys so we don’t need to be worried about hurting anyone’s feelings.

Have a great week
