Don't be shy

Make sure you ask the right questions

I am working on a programme to help young dental professionals hit the ground running in their first job and how to stand out from the crowd in order to get that job.

This will be a series of templates you can download and use for job applications and to help you organise your day to make it stress free as well as helping you work well with your DA.

Quite often, we don't take the time to fully appreciate what we have right under our noses.

Having a curious approach to life, and people, makes it far more interesting and rewarding.

Take, for example, your team members or dental assistant (DA). Have you ever asked them what they know? What skills do they have? What have they learned along the way at other practices?

I thought so.

Don’t underestimate how much your DA has to offer and thatHere is your piece of writing with spelling and grammar corrections in British English:

Quite often, we don't take the time to fully appreciate what we have right under our noses.

Having a curious approach to life and people makes it far more interesting and rewarding.

Take, for example, your team members or dental assistant (DA). Have you ever asked them what they know? What skills do they have? What have they learned along the way at other practices?

I thought so.

Don’t underestimate how much your DA has to offer as they might not have had the invitation to share with you.

For example:

Have they ever entered notes for their dentist?

Do they know about four-handed dentistry? If so, how were things set up?

Have they ever used a triplex to clear the operator's mirror as they work?

Do they know how to help with rubber dam placement?

Have they helped floss the dam between the teeth?

Now, as a young clinician, you may not know some of these things yourself. So the next step is to ask them if they can show you some of these things. You then need to have an open mindset for change.

There’s an old saying that goes, “You don’t know what you don’t know.”

Two people benefit, no, three people will benefit from you asking these questions. Your DA will feel more fulfilled in her work, you will have appointments that flow smoothly, and it will help you run to time. Your patient will notice the collaborative teamwork.

Don’t be shy, even if you’re new, ask the right questions. they might not have had the invitation to share with you.

Have a great week
