Graphics, research and clarity

Thanks for reading and have a great week. I’d like to grow this newsletter so please share with a friend

When I was a dental student, dental materials felt an irrelevant topic invented to torture students; a necessary evil.

As time has gone by, my understanding of the need to pay close attention to the material I am using has become forefront. I always read the instructions for a material and it never ceases to amaze me that clinicians don’t.

It’s always worth remembering that materials are developed by scientists and tested in labs; and to a limited extent in the mouth. So,

following the instructions to the letter and aiming to achieve an ideal environment for material use will give you better outcomes. Or if not better outcomes, at least you can complete that restoration or task knowing you have done the best you can do.

@dentinaltube seems to be largely managed by Dr Nate Lawson, however there are credits to Augusto Robles, Celin Arce and Hernan Lazaro Villa in the bio.

I understand this account was created for the benefit of students at University of Alabama, Birmingham, however it’s reach is worldwide. The account has been active since March 2018.

It’s all business, no personal, the graphic explainers are amazing and the content runs the full gamut of dentistry.

It can be tempting to just look at the most recent posts of any account and social media is notorious for the short loved nature of content, however there is an enduring value of the content on this account.

It’s worth taking time to dig back through to the early posts, there’s some useful explainers of how the TMJ works, different wedges and matrix systems .

This account has managed to transform and unsexy topic into one that is compelling. In these days of complex bonding systems and an ever increasing array of materials. It is a good staring point for research into optimal use of the materials around us.
