It’s hard to work Dr Miguel Ortiz out. I think I know what he’s trying to do, however, sometimes it doesn’t work out the way he would like.

Dr Ortiz is a disruptor who is challenging the paradigms of restorative dentistry and the need for the profession to move onto bonded restorations to preserve tooth strucutre at all costs.

He can be combative at times; sometimes this can come across as quite an agressive style of debating. Some of that may come down to him speaking english as a second language and the communication style of his Argentinian background. He posts in spanish and english. He is a trained lab tech as well as a denitst and photographer. He has access to respected clinicians around the world.

He’s not so much about preps, he’s about research; interpreting and critically apriasing literature rather than lazily jumping to conclusions. His values are in challenging long held pardigms of the profession and I feel that this is key to moving the profession along on the path to least interventionist dentistry.

Dr Ortiz has posted a series of interviews entitled “Masters of the Craft” where he interviews different prosthodontists/dentists around the world. This series of short videos is useful in reflecting on your practice and how to provide dentistry that is truly in the best interests of the patient. Where do you sit on the continuum?

Obviously, Dr Ortiz has something to sell, which are his courses, however I feel he is generous with information and is a valuable member of your instagram dentist group. His courses do not dominate the feed. His feed will always surprise you and does not have a predictable flow.

Dr Ortiz courts controversy and will not be for everyone but I feel it is important not to exist in an echo chamber.

When you go for self-relfection, introspection and a willingness to challenge your long held beliefs and assumptions, you undergo a paradigm shift.
