Become someone people want to mentor
It takes two..
I came across a quote this week that really resonated with me: “Become someone people want to mentor.”
Instead of solely focusing on finding a mentor, why not focus on developing work habits, learning strategies and personal growth that make you stand out as someone a mentor would be excited to guide?
As a young dentist, what does that actually look like?
📚 Learning is personal – people learn what and when they choose to. Simply showing up for a mentoring session won’t make you a better dentist. True growth happens when you take ownership of your learning.
🔍 Self-reflection is key – regularly ask yourself: What went well this week? What could I improve on?
💡 Be proactive – if there's a technique you need to master, do your research, practice it and bring questions to your mentor. It’s not just about what they teach you; it’s about what you bring to the table.
📖 Follow up – did your mentor recommend articles or resources? Be sure to read them and come prepared to discuss what you've learned.
📸 Document your progress – take photos of your work and ask for constructive feedback. It’s an excellent way to track your improvement over time.
It’s easy to become passive in a mentoring relationship, but you’ll grow far more if you actively put in the work.
Have a great week
