Surely?
Is AI our friend?
There was a post on Linkedin recently that got me thinking.
It was about the use of AI by candidates applying for jobs in the dental profession, or maybe any profession.
The take away from the article was that employers look dimly on applications that have been created with the assistance of AI.
That there were HR softwares that could sniff out AI modified applications and these applications were immediately discarded. That it was somewhat deceptive to tamper with your application in this way.
There were comments supporting this approach indicating that this was an approach that the commenters had taken with applications. That using AI for your CV or application was a “BAD THING” as my Latin teacher would say.
Now hold on a moment.
These same dentists’ employees were using AI powered tools in their practices. They talk about how it helps with CAD design, powering their record keeping, the reading of radiographs, and managing the front desk. That AI was going to simplify their lives.
And yet the dentist or the DA applying for a job is not able to use “everyone’s best friend” to help their application?
Now unless you're employing that dentist to write research articles or your book, what’s the harm? Especially when they are using AI powered tools at work.
The need for your DA to be efficient at typing and recording your notes is reduced if you’re dictating them to AI. If you’re worried about their writing skills then at the interview ask them to take dictation; in the same way you might ask a receptionist to give change. Although giving change is most probably an infrequent requisite these days of cashless transactions.
DON’T FORGET, ultimately your notes are your responsibility.
As dentists the profession is embracing AI at every turn whether we like it/ know it or not.
It's exciting. It's the future.
Is it better as a business owner/ employer to have a team that helps you move forward to the AI powered future rather than one that is stuck in the past.
We employ our team to make connections with our patients and each other, and their written application is merely a stepping stone to get a sense of their ability to do this when they are interviewed.
I’d rather work with a team of DAs that were great with patients, amazing at four handed and keeping me on track rather than DAs who have the best grasp of creative writing.
Similarly, we want our clinicians to build relationships and focus on delivering great care. Communication and growth mindset are the most important attributes.
